Coach and Athlete Jodi Vance Passes Away Due to Severe Dehydration at 2025 Arnold Sports Festival

Tragic Loss Underscores the Perils of Extreme Dehydration in Competitive Bodybuilding

The bodybuilding community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jodi Vance, a dedicated coach and competitor, who tragically passed away at the 2025 Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio. Vance, who was in attendance as a coach, suffered a fatal cardiac event, reportedly induced by severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

Her untimely passing has sent shockwaves through the fitness industry, reigniting concerns about the dangers of extreme contest preparation, particularly unsafe weight-cutting methods, diuretic abuse, and severe fluid depletion—practices that have long been a controversial aspect of bodybuilding and physique sports.

Jodi Vance’s Role at the Arnold Sports Festival

While Vance was not competing at the event, she was present at the Arnold Sports Festival in a coaching capacity, offering guidance and support to her athletes. Reports suggest she fell ill while backstage, experiencing severe dehydration-related symptoms, including nausea, dizziness, and vomiting.

Contrary to speculation that she was prepping for an upcoming show, her coach, Justin Mihaly, clarified that she was not in peak week for the Arnold Amateur but was instead 20 weeks out from her next scheduled competition.

Heartfelt Announcement from Family

News of Jodi’s tragic passing was confirmed via a poignant statement on her Instagram page, where her family expressed their profound grief and urged fellow athletes to prioritize their well-being above all else.

“For those who haven’t heard yet, Jodi passed away yesterday afternoon. Her heart stopped due to complications of severe dehydration. Despite all efforts by the hospital, they were unable to revive her. She was a beautiful person inside and out, and she will be missed every single day. This was sudden and unexpected. Please give her family time to process this loss in peace. If anyone takes anything from this, please put your health first.”

Tributes from Friends, Athletes, and the Bodybuilding Community

Jodi’s influence extended far beyond the competition stage. As a revered coach, mentor, and inspiration to countless competitors, her passing has left an immense void in the industry. One of her closest friends and athletes, Lee Doernte, shared a deeply emotional tribute, reflecting on her unwavering dedication to the sport and the moments leading up to her untimely passing.

“Yesterday was the worst day of my life. I lost my best friend, coach, nutritionist, partner, family member, and the most brilliant, beautiful girl I’ve met in many years. For the last 2 years, Jodi trained with me, posed me, coached me, and shared her life with me. Yesterday, as I was on stage competing, Jodi suffered from massive dehydration from vomiting. Being the ever professional, she didn’t tell anyone as she stated, ‘I’m a coach first.’ A friend took her back to the hotel to get her fluids. During the break, she became unresponsive and was rushed to the ER. Jodi had a heart attack and couldn’t be saved. She died never seeing that she helped me achieve a dream. Nothing will ever express how much I’ll miss you.”

Coach’s Revelation: Unseen Risks in Contest Prep

Jodi’s tragic passing has sparked critical discussions regarding the risks associated with extreme competition prep. Her coach, Justin Mihaly, revealed that she had reportedly consumed dangerous substances without his or her family’s knowledge, potentially in an attempt to enhance her stage-ready physique for the Arnold Expo.

“Jodi used two extremely hazardous substances to improve her physique. I assume just for the Arnold Expo. Without my knowledge, my approval, without family’s knowledge, their approval. But Jodi was not prepping for Arnold. She was not in peak weeks. There’s no reason she should have been dehydrated. Jodi competed back in December.”

Medical reports indicated that Jodi’s potassium levels were dangerously elevated upon hospitalization, suggesting the possible use of potassium-sparing diuretics. These pharmaceuticals are often misused in bodybuilding to achieve extreme levels of muscle definition by eliminating water retention. However, improper use can have fatal consequences, disrupting electrolyte balance and triggering cardiac arrest.

“That diuretic, combined with the harsh fat-burning drug, which is something I’ve become an advocate against, caught me and everyone by surprise. It had some poor downstream effects. It caused Jodi to code, which means her heart stopped. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.”

The Lethal Dangers of Extreme Dehydration in Bodybuilding

Jodi’s passing serves as a grim reminder of the hazards associated with extreme dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and diuretic misuse in the bodybuilding industry. In pursuit of the ultimate stage condition, many athletes resort to aggressive weight-cutting strategies, which pose severe health risks, including:

  • Severe electrolyte imbalances, leading to impaired muscle contractions and heart function

  • Acute kidney failure, due to excessive fluid loss and impaired renal function

  • Heat exhaustion and collapse, exacerbated by diuretic-induced dehydration

  • Cardiac arrest, triggered by critical potassium and sodium depletion

Tragically, Jodi’s passing is not an isolated incident in the world of bodybuilding. The sport has witnessed similar losses in the past, including the death of IFBB professional bodybuilder Mohammed Benaziza in 1992, who succumbed to severe dehydration-related complications.

Jodi Vance’s Legacy and the Push for Safer Competitive Standards

Although Jodi was still early in her competitive journey, she had already made a lasting impact as both an athlete and mentor. Her dedication to coaching and inspiring others left an indelible mark on the industry, shaping the careers of many aspiring competitors.

Her tragic passing should serve as a pivotal wake-up call to the bodybuilding community. It highlights the urgent need for reform in contest preparation protocols, increased awareness about the dangers of extreme dehydration, and stronger advocacy for prioritizing long-term health over temporary stage aesthetics.

As the fitness world mourns this tremendous loss, Jodi Vance’s legacy may catalyze a shift towards safer practices in competitive bodybuilding, ensuring that future generations of athletes approach the sport with a heightened focus on health and sustainability.
